Results of last month’s poll show wide awareness of, concern for frauds and scams

More than two-thirds of CARP Action Online readers say they’ve personally received fake e-mails or other attempts to use the Internet to gain access to their banking and other confidential information.

Over 2,000 readers responded to last month’s poll on frauds and scams, and the results show, overwhelmingly, that they’re well aware of the risks:

• 92% somewhat or strongly agreed that the Internet has made it “a lot easier” for people to be victimized by frauds and scams

• 97% somewhat or strongly agreed that they’re reading and hearing more about identity theft and other sophisticated fraud techniques

• 68% said they’d personally received fake e-mails, or been subjected to other attempts to use the Internet to gain access to confidential information

• 89% somewhat or strongly agreed that seniors are more likely to be victimized by such techniques, than other age groups
