CARP Chapter Field Report: Vancouver OAS Roundtable

April Lewis, B.C. Representative and Jeffrey Sefton, Chair Vancouver Central Chapter were invited by Libby Davies, MP Vancouver – East to be part of a Round Table discussion on the changes to the OAS/GIS made recently by the Harper government. The event was entitled “Our Pensions are at Risk!”

Guest panelists included Bill Tieleman, Political Journalist; Ellen Woodsworth, former Vancouver City councillor; Larry Brown, Secretary-General of National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE); Gudrun Langolf, President, Vancouver Municipal and Regional Retirees Association (VMRRA) & VP of COSCO and April Lewis, representing CARP.

April presented CARP’s position on the OAS issue and stressed that the Government’s move to change the OAS/GIS entitlement age from 65 to 67 only adds fuel to the intergenerational war that the media is stirring up on this issue. Aging is a societal issue which affects all Canadians. She stressed CARP will continue to speak for the 300,000 Canadians who live below the poverty line, 70% of whom are women.

CARP will focus on their “Hands Off the OAS” campaign and is committed to advocating for the quality of life for all Canadian seniors including those who are marginalized and affected by this draconian measure.
