Chapter #16 wishes you a happy year in 2014.

We are fortunate to have Kevin Tomlinson back at our meeting to kick-off the 2014 year’s activity. Kevin was here before to do a very good presentation regarding potential tax liabilities faced by snowbirds. This time his topic is one that concerns every Canadian and it comes at the right time of year.

Title:  “Common mistakes and opportunities on your tax return”

Key Points: misunderstood tax rules, income splitting, capital gains and losses, deductions vs. credits.

Dig out last year’s tax return and prepare your questions for Kevin. Questions and answers are usually a vital part of a presentation.

Many people miss out on various credits and allowable deductions every year. One thing you can count on: If you don’t claim them, CRA won’t tell you that you forgot them.

This chapter urgently needs a much younger group of persons to guide it into the future. It needs a Zoomer with a little bit of dedication and a whole lot of persuasion (I obviously lack the latter) to encourage people to offer their help and ideas.  You have the opportunity to step up to bat and drive this chapter into action. Ideas that worked well for me when I was a young “whipper-snapper” during World War 2 have not resonated well today. This chapter needs a Board and an Executive to run the show and it needs YOU.
