Events on Oct. 1 and Oct. 13 to focus on older adults

The Sudbury Chapter of the Canadian Association of Retired Persons and Friendly to Seniors – Sudbury announced Wednesday they are holding all-candidates meetings for the two federal ridings in the Greater Sudbury area.

The first meeting will feature candidates in the Nickel Belt riding. It takes place Oct. 1 at the Canadian Legion at 2200 Long Lake Road from 7-9 p.m. The second debate will feature candidates in the Sudbury riding, and will take place at the Parkside Older Adult Centre on Durham Street beginning at 2.30 p.m. on Oct. 13.

In a news release, Hugh Kruzel, chair of CARP, and speaking on behalf of both seniors groups, said the election is of great importance to older adults who make up an increasing percentage of our population.

They are very concerned about a number of issues related not only to seniors but all citizens.

Topics to be addressed at the meetings will include taxes, housing, health and transportation, as well as support for the arts and other areas where federal involvement can be an influence and can impact the lives of residents in the two ridings.

Both events will include presentations and debate, with candidates given the opportunity to present their platforms and then answer questions and debate the issues within specific time limits.

CARP and Friendly to Seniors – Sudbury have a history of hosting successful all-candidates events at all political levels — municipal, provincial and federal. The general public is invited to attend, as well.
