Healthcare Advocate Leads CARP Chapter in Ajax Pickering

Randy Filinski is the volunteer Chair of the CARP Ajax-Pickering, Ontario CARP Chapter and our member of the month, for September 2015.

With the support of a dedicated Board of Directors and committed and active members, the Ajax-Pickering Chapter has been focused on healthcare for seniors and the sandwich generation of caregivers.

From their update to local members on recent chapter advocacy activity: “We held discussions with Kelly Kay, executive Director of the new Senior Care Network in Durham. We contributed to panel discussions with our Regional experts on Mental Health and Addictions and, recently, held an open dialogue on ‘End of Life’ care with the Rouge Valley Health System. We were asked several times and provided CARP member focus groups 2 to give community feedback on issues like ‘Technology and Frail Seniors,’ ‘End of Life’ necessary services and on the potential merger of the hospital systems within our boundaries. Throughout the year, we also continued our support of senior safety and awareness of elder abuse with the Durham Elder Abuse Network (D.E.A.N.). In October, we raised our CARP flag at Pickering City Hall and at the Ajax Town Hall in support of National Seniors’ Day to recognize their contribution to our great Canadian culture. To ensure our community is heard, our Board has held meetings and interviews with our Mayors and Councilors, MPPs, and MPs. We used the CARP “Top Ten” advocacy issues to highlight our community feedback, along with specific feedback from all of our meetings.”

Congratulations and many thanks to Randy and all the CARP members in the Ajax-Pickering Chapter.
