FRAUD AWARENESS – Everyone’s Concern

Almost everyone has received a phone call or an e-mail with an offer that seemed too good to be true; or a phone call from a long lost relative in a desperate situation and needs your help, or an e-mail from some Nigerian prince who needs your help to rescue his family fortune from a corrupt government.  Ninety-nine point nine percent of these are all scams.

But these are only a small sampling of the scams that unscrupulous people are attempting to foist onto unsuspecting people, most often Seniors. Knowing the breadth and depth of these scams can be most helpful and enable us to take appropriate action quickly to prevent them.

To this end, The Competition Bureau has prepared a publication called “The Little Black book of Scams.”  You can download  this publication from the Competition Bureau’s website. Click Here to go to the website and download the book. It’s free. It provides a detailed description of the many scams that are out there, how they are perpetrated, and how you can defend against them.

New scams are appearing every day, and we must be cautious. The best and most immediate defence against anything suspicious is to hang up the phone or delete the e-mail.

In the mean time, we can all arm ourselves by knowing what to expect.  We encourage you to download this book and become familiar with the risks.
