North Bay & District Chapter for Zoomers
SPRING 2010 NEWSLETTER
2010 SPRING CONFERENCE - ZOOMER NORTH 2010 SOLD OUT OVER 215 Chairman Ron Farrell opened the conference by recognizing event leaders, Madeleine & Rob Mantha and their committee for their efforts in putting together this sold out event.
As one CARP member attendee said, “This is by far the best local CARP conference I have ever attended, and I’ll be sure to attend your fall conference too.” It was a lively fun filled event, with a variety of speakers and presentations.
Moses Znaimer was the feature presenter at the sold-out event organized by the North Bay Chapter. In his introduction of Moses, chapter chair Ron Farrell outlined the dynamics and phases associated with Change Management Theory that Moses has put into practice since taking on the leadership of CARP. Following his video presentation of A New Vision of Aging. Moses engaged in a lively Q&A session, during which members identified a number of issues of particular concern in Northern Ontario, including the environment, health care services and employment opportunities. Moses explained the importance of attracting younger Zoomers to become CARP members and urged those in attendance to buy gift memberships for their sons and daughters. Local MP Anthony Rota and North Bay Mayor Vic and Mayor Vic Fideli were in attendance, and both praised the chapter for its service to the community.

Local Chapter Vice-Chair Bill Green (RBC Dominion Sesurities) introduced Chris Stinson of RBC Asset Management who gave a very informative talk titled “After the Storm”, which explained all the ramifications and issues surrounding the recent economic slowdown and investment market problems. And as Chris explained, there are hopefully blue skies ahead, and with proper planning, the future does look bright. Chris is from the Huntsville office of RBC Asset Management. After a wonderful Asian Buffet lunch at the North Bay Best Western Hotel, sponsored by RBC Asset Management, that provided much laughter was none other than Don Herron’s alter ego, Charlie Farquharson, who regaled the audience for more than an hour with his array of mangled “Farquharsonisms”. It was certainly a wonderful way to end lunch with a walk down memory lane with such a well know Ontario entertainer. Thank you Don for your wonderful humour!
To wrap up the presentations, the chief of Staff at the North Bay & District Hospital, Dr. Madden, gave an enlightened talk on “Patient Centered Care – what does it mean to you?” A great ending to a great agenda. Finally the list of more than twenty prizes came to an end with our Grand Prize Winner of a pair of WestJet tickets to anywhere WestJet flies, CARP member Carolyn Andrews of Huntsville. CONGRATULATIONS Carolyn!
Following our Spring Conference, was our Annual General Meeting of the North Bay and District Chapter of CARP , attended by many of the Conference attendees and our Board of Directors.
Chair's Report: Ron Farrell This is our fifth annual meeting and conference. This past year we have supported national office activities in advocacy, organized and sponsored two seminars locally on such subjects as new driving rules for handheld devices, alcohol limits, and exercises for healthy brains. We also cosponsored several financial seminars around the District with RBC Dominion Securities. Nationally we passed bylaw amendments to remove the age restriction for membership and locally your board of directors amended our requirement for separate chapter membership requirement. If you are a CARP member in our district you are automatically a chapter member. Lastly, this year we opened our conference to non members for the first time. The chapter has evolved over the five years since we started but one thing has not changed – we need members • to organize events • to advocate for legislative change • to track our bylaws and do our corporate reporting • to manage our finances • to manage our website • to write our newsletters and manage communications
We meet for two hours once/month and you don’t need to be a professional to help out – just be there to work with the rest of our board. Our members are all around the room and if you are prepared to help stick up your hand and someone will come get your name and address. While that is happening let me thank those retiring directors who have worked hard to make events happen and corporate reports up to date. First Madeleine & Rob Mantha, Co-Directors of Event Planning; and Jill Shields, Corporate Secretary. A huge thank you to them and all of the board for the functioning of our chapter during the past year.
Elections for Board of Directors 2010-2011: Congratulations to the elected 2010-2011 Board of Directors Ron Farrell Anne Farrell Roger Liddle Terry Martinelli Charlie Taylor Peter DeGraaf Alliston Stone Lorraine Guillmette Daniel Cole Ann Holding Hugh Stickle

The first meeting of the new board will be at 1:30 June 7, 2010
