N.I.C.E. (National Initiative for the Care of the Elderly) is conducting a study with the University of Toronto and needs the help of 300 Older Adult Participants for a National Elder Abuse Telephone Survey

Adults 55 years of age or older are invited to participate in a telephone research interview where they will be asked questions about their personal safety and experience with mistreatment. Given the survey topic, individuals who have experienced abuse or neglect are encouraged to participate; however, this is not a requirement. Participants should be living in non-institutional settings.

The issue of abuse and neglect of older adults in Canada is a growing concern. This research will ultimately help improve policies, services, and preventative measures to support Canadian seniors. All participants will be offered resources and the opportunity to speak with a professional counselor following their interviews if they wish.

Telephone interviews will take place during the month of June, 2011. Participants will need a comfortable, quiet, and private space in which they may speak with the interviewer and answer the survey. The interviews are expected to take approximately 30-45 minutes.
