CARP Congratulates David Eby on His Re-Election in British Columbia

CARP congratulates Premier-elect David Eby on his re-election in British Columbia, following a tightly contested race that underscored the importance of seniors’ issues in our province. This election proved to be one of the closest in recent memory, with both the intensity of the campaign and the time it took to officially confirm the results, reflecting the significance of the issues at hand for all British Columbians. The commitment of candidates, supporters, and volunteers across the province highlights the democratic dedication of the people of BC to ensuring that their voices are heard on issues that matter most.

As Premier-elect Eby prepares to continue his leadership, CARP encourages his administration to focus on key priorities that directly impact the well-being and quality of life of seniors. Throughout the election, CARP members and advocates were actively involved in elevating seniors’ needs to the forefront of the conversation. Our “CARP 5” campaign has captured the most pressing concerns for our members and their families, and we are hopeful that these will be top of mind for the new administration as they move forward in their work.

The CARP 5 priorities, developed with input from members across the province, emphasize the need for specific actions that will benefit not only seniors but also the broader BC community. These include:

  1. Increased Access to Essential Vaccines
Preventive healthcare is fundamental to keeping seniors safe and healthy, especially as we continue to address evolving health concerns. Seniors, who face higher risks of complications from illnesses like influenza and shingles, benefit significantly from robust vaccination programs. CARP calls on the new government to remove barriers to vaccine access, ensuring that seniors can benefit from the protective measures they need to stay healthy.
  2. Addressing Healthcare Workforce Shortages
With the growing demand for healthcare services across BC, there is an urgent need to address the shortage of healthcare workers, which affects the quality and accessibility of care for seniors. The new government has an opportunity to focus on strengthening the healthcare workforce by supporting training programs, fair compensation, and recruitment initiatives. A stable and well-supported healthcare workforce will directly benefit seniors who rely on timely and accessible care.
  3. Enhanced Funding for Home Care
Home care services enable many seniors to remain in their own homes, maintaining their independence and reducing the burden on healthcare facilities. However, existing funding levels have not kept pace with the needs of our aging population. CARP encourages the government to expand funding for home care services, allowing more seniors to access the in-home support they need while contributing to a more efficient healthcare system overall.
  4. Tax Relief for Caregivers and Home Adaptations
Caregivers provide invaluable support to seniors, often at a personal and financial cost. Additionally, home adaptations—such as installing ramps, handrails, and stair lifts—can make a significant difference in allowing seniors to live independently. CARP advocates for targeted tax relief to alleviate the financial burdens on caregivers and families. Recognizing the contributions of caregivers and supporting home adaptations are essential steps in creating a senior-friendly BC.
  5. Reducing Transit Fares for Seniors
Access to affordable public transportation is vital for seniors to maintain independence and social connections. Reduced transit fares would make it easier for seniors to participate in community activities, access services, and remain active. CARP encourages the new administration to consider policies that make public transit more affordable for seniors, reducing isolation and supporting their overall quality of life.

CARP is dedicated to working constructively with the new government to bring attention to these critical areas. We look forward to engaging in open dialogue with Premier-elect Eby’s administration and continuing to advocate on behalf of BC seniors. This election has shown that the voices of seniors and their families are being heard, and CARP is committed to ensuring that these issues remain a priority.

We believe that addressing these five priorities will benefit not only seniors but also communities across British Columbia. CARP will continue to advocate for policies that uphold the dignity, independence, and quality of life of seniors in BC, and we invite Premier-elect Eby and his government to join us in this mission.
