Vision loss means so much more than reduced eyesight. It can have an impact on your overall well-being. Every March 23rd, the World Council of Optometry invites patients and eye care providers to use World Optometry Day as a reminder that eye care IS health care.
“As primary health care providers, optometrists are your first line of defense in many important diagnoses – from diabetes, to tumours to problems within the eye, like retinal detachment,” says Rudy Buttignol, president of the Canadian Association of Retired Persons. “And living with age-related vision loss often leads to a loss of independence,” he adds.
At the Canadian Association of Retired Persons, we believe maintaining good eyesight is part of a fuller, healthier life. Thanks to advancements in research, three out of four cases of vision loss are either preventable or treatable when caught early.
This is where optometrists come in – detecting and diagnosing vision problems before the risk of progression.
CARP encourages every Canadian senior to arrange regular eye exams with an optometrist.
