RSV Vaccine Program Expansions in ON & NS Latest CARP Wins

Stethoscope and medical records

Starting this fall, Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) immunization will now be available through Ontario’s and Nova Scotia’s publicly funded programs to all individuals aged 75 and older. Previously, only certain high-risk adults aged 60 plus, such as residents of long-term care homes or retirement homes, were included.

CARP applauds these two provincial governments for delivering a level of preventative healthcare that meets the expert recommendations for dealing with RSV. Our advocacy on vaccine access and equity has led to many wins in many provinces, including the introduction of a free shingles program for 65+ in Nova Scotia this past spring and programs across the provinces that offer high dose flu vaccine for those 65+.

The expanded RSV programs bring Ontario and Nova Scotia in line with what’s being offered in New Brunswick. Alberta’s program extends to those 60 years or older who live in a continuing care or supportive living facility, while those age 70+ (or an Indigenous person age 60 years or older) can access free RSV shots by appointment. Manitoba, meanwhile, offers free RSV vaccines to those 60+ living in personal care homes. Quebec has free RSV vaccines for individuals aged 60+ living in long-term care centres (CHSLD) or seniors 75+ living in private seniors’ residences.

Nova Scotians aged 75 and older can book their free RSV vaccine through pharmacies and public health, starting September 15. Primary care providers will begin offering the vaccine in November.

In Ontario, the expanded free RSV immunization program will roll out this fall. You can check this page for updates on how to get it.

Vaccines are a critical part of the proactive strategy to “prevent severe illness, hospitalizations and complications, especially among those most vulnerable to respiratory infections” for the upcoming respiratory illness season, Dr. Kieran Moore, Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, said on announcing the program expansion.
