This is a reprint of a letter sent by CARP president Rudy Buttignol on March 14, 2025 to elected officials in British Columbia asking for the provincial government to step up and introduce a free shingles vaccine program that applies to all seniors.
It’s time for British Columbia to join with other provinces in offering free shingles shots. Just this week, the Newfoundland/Labrador government announced it will introduce a shingles vaccine program for residents aged 65-70 starting on June 1.
Nova Scotia committed to a universal program for those 65 and older in its recent throne speech. Ontario, Alberta, Yukon, Prince Edward Island and Québec already offer some level of free shingles vaccines to seniors. B.C.’s program for First Nations Elders 60+ is important but falls far short of protecting all those in need of protection.
On behalf of the Canadian Association of Retired Persons (CARP) and as one of its 20,000 members in British Columbia, I respectfully ask you to join me in calling on Premier David Eby to implement the long-discussed free shingles prevention program for all seniors in our province.
As the population ages, it’s vital that we take proactive steps to
protect the health of our seniors. A comprehensive shingles prevention program would improve the quality of life for many older British Columbians and potentially reduce the burden on our healthcare system.
The bipartisan support that already exists demonstrates the widespread recognition of the importance of this issue. Former Health Minister Adrian Dix acknowledged that shingles is “an issue.” A report from the Office of the Seniors Advocate further emphasized its urgency by highlighting the provision of free shingles vaccines as one of the top five immediate actions recommended for the government.
Moreover, the British Columbia Select Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services has recommended funding two doses of shingles vaccine for older British Columbians as part of the Budget 2024.
So, on behalf of CARP’s 20,000 B.C. members, I urge the government to act swiftly on promises and recommendations and implement a province-wide shingles vaccination program for ALL seniors. It’s time to demonstrate our commitment to the health and well-being of our older citizens.
Sincerely,
Rudy Buttignol, C.M.
President, Canadian Association of Retired Persons
