Research Supporting Older Adults with Low Vision

Help improve healthcare for Canadians with vision loss.

Researchers at the University of Ottawa are inviting older adults with low vision to share their experiences accessing healthcare. Your story can help identify barriers, challenge stigma, and support more inclusive care for all.

Study Title : Barriers and Bias: Exploring Stigma in Healthcare Accommodations for Canadians with Low Vision

Interested in sharing your healthcare experiences?

We’re inviting older adults living with low vision to take part in a study about how Canadians experience the healthcare system when asking for accommodations. This research, led by Dr. Sarah Fraser at the University of Ottawa, aims to better understand how stigma and ageism may affect care and to identify ways to make healthcare services more inclusive and accessible for people with vision sensory impairments.

What does participation involve?

● One confidential interview in English (approximately 45–60 minutes)

● Participation can take place in person at the University of Ottawa (Lees Campus) or online (via Zoom)

● A small compensation will be provided for your time.

Who can participate?

● Adults aged 60 and older

● Self-identify as having low vision (mild, moderate, severe). If known, exact visual acuity will also be documented.

● Have used the Canadian healthcare system within the past 10 years and are willing to share their experiences

Timeline:

Recruitment and interviews will continue until December 2025. Study findings will be analyzed in early 2026, with results shared publicly in fall 2026.
