But Eng agrees the time for talk has passed and that in addition to protecting the interests of those with pension plans, it’s also time to act for those without any pensions at all: “Retirees ravaged by this economic downturn cannot wait for more studies.”

CARP’s message to politicians has been that 70% of older Canadians vote regularly and “now that we’re also living longer, we will be voting regularly for a lot longer. So either you help protect our retirement or we’ll help you get to yours,” Eng says.

CARP has called for a Universal Pension Plan modeled on the CPP for the one in three Canadians who retire without any retirement savings.
