ANNUAL REPORT 2009

9. April 16, 2009: Spring General Meeting: A General Meeting of the Chapter was held at the Reception Centre of Carnell’s Funeral Home, Topsail Road, Mount Pearl. Mr Geoff Carnell gave a very informative presentation on “Important Information about Funerals and Finances”. Members attending this meeting posed many and varied questions during the question and answer session that followed, and by all reports, this was a most worthwhile meeting.

10. Volunteer Recognition Reception: The week of April 19 to April 25 was designated Volunteer Week in the province. The slogan this years was “Volunteers Light Up Communities”. At the invitation of the City of St. John’s, I attended the 2009 Volunteer Recognition Reception at City Hall on April 22. Representatives of other Senior’s groups also attended and entertainment was provided by the Senior’s Guitar Group. I would like at this time to thank each and every one of you who has given of their time and talents on behalf of CARP and the St. John’s-Avalon Chapter.

11. May 6, 2009: Mount Pearl Seniors Independence Group: Ralph Morris and I attended the Mount Pearl Seniors Independence Group “Seniors Awareness and Health Information Day” held at the Reid Community Centre. The Chapter was provided with a display table at which the new membership brochures were distributed. We were able to speak with MHAs Steve Kent and Elizabeth Marshall. Mayor Randy Simms brought greetings on behalf of the City and John Reid, the Chair of SIG did acknowledge our presence in his remarks.

12. May 27-29: Atlantic Seniors Housing Research Alliance: St. John’s-Avalon Chapter has been a stakeholder in ASHRA since the beginning of this project. The final ASHRA project event was the “2009 Atlantic Seniors Housing Needs Conference” theld May 27-29 at Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax. As a continuously active member of the Stakeholder group, I was invited to attend this conference and was pleased to accept this invitation. A copy of my Report of this Conference can be found at http://www.carp.ca/StJohnsAvalon/index.cfm?documentid=3876&type=full&cityid=183

13. June 8, 2009: Drive Wise Seminar: The Chapter hosted another Drive Wise Seminar for older drivers on June 8, 2009 at the Nape Boardroom. The Seminar introduced a variety of suggestions and driving strategies that have proven to reduce the most likely causes of collisions and other mishaps faced by older drivers. A preventative, go-slow common sense approach to driving was presented together with concrete advice on how to avoid problems on our increasingly congested roadways. This seminar was intended for CARP members and their friends since studies have shown that driver education does help reduce the risk of accidents and injury.

14. June 17: General Meeting A most successful Chapter General Meeting was held on Wednesday, June 17, 7:30 PM. at St. Mark’s Church, with about 40 attendees. Mr. Glen Roebothan conducted a very comprehensive and intensive two-hour session which provided in depth information on the need for adequate planning in the whole area of personal will preparation. This meeting was intended as a follow-up to our spring meeting at which Mr. Geoff Carnell emphasized the necessity today for everyone to have a Will prepared, noting that many older persons do not have a Will or an existing Will is often inadequate. Mr. Roeboethan reaffirmed this over and over during his well received presentation.
