The Looming Threats to Seniors’ Financial Security: A Call to Action
In recent years, Canadian seniors have faced a growing number of threats to their financial security.
The Canadian Association of Retired Persons (CARP) is uniquely positioned to stand up against these challenges, advocating tirelessly on behalf of older adults. With potential cuts to Old Age Security (OAS), proposed taxes on home equity, and capital gains taxes on the sale of primary residences, seniors’ financial stability is under siege. It’s a battle CARP is determined to win, but we need the support of every Canadian senior to safeguard our future.

Historically, governments of all political stripes have attempted to balance their budgets on the backs of seniors. We need only to look back to the mid-1990s when then-Finance Minister Paul Martin and the Liberal Party sought to eliminate OAS. The proposal sparked widespread outrage and was eventually shelved, but it served as a stark reminder that seniors’ benefits are often viewed as expendable.
Similarly, under the Conservative government led by Stephen Harper, an attempt was made to move the eligibility age for OAS from 65 to 67. This significant policy shift was neither mentioned in their party platform nor discussed with Canadian seniors. The lack of consultation was alarming, and CARP swiftly mobilized to voice the concerns of older Canadians. Our advocacy played a crucial role in ensuring that the decision was revisited and reversed by subsequent administrations.
Today, we face new and equally daunting challenges. The proposed taxes on home equity and capital gains taxes on the sale of primary residences threaten to erode the financial foundations that many seniors have worked their entire lives to build. For countless older adults, their home is not just a place to live but a vital source of financial security. Imposing additional taxes on these assets would unfairly burden seniors who rely on the equity in their homes to fund their retirement years.

In recent years, many seniors may have felt a sense of complacency during relatively stable economic times. However, as we now face severe economic headwinds, it is crucial to recognize that policymakers may view seniors as a quiet group that can be taken advantage of. This perception could lead to decisions that undermine the financial security of older Canadians.
At CARP, we understand the profound impact these potential policy changes could have on seniors across Canada. As the leading advocacy organization for older adults, we are dedicated to fighting against these threats. Our non-partisan stance ensures that we can hold any government accountable, regardless of political affiliation. Our mission is to protect the financial security and overall well-being of Canadian seniors.
But we cannot do it alone. The strength of CARP lies in our united voice. When we stand together, we amplify our influence and make it clear to policymakers that seniors will not be overlooked or exploited. Our strength at the ballot box is undeniable, and it is imperative that we leverage this power to safeguard our financial future
We urge all Canadians, especially seniors, to join CARP and support our efforts. Membership in CARP is not just about receiving benefits and discounts; it is about joining a movement committed to protecting the interests of older adults. Together, we can ensure that the voices of seniors are heard loud and clear in the halls of power.
As we face these uncertain times, it is crucial that we remain vigilant and proactive. The threats to our financial security are real, but with CARP leading the charge, we have the means to fight back effectively. By joining CARP, you become part of a powerful network dedicated to advocating for fair and just policies that protect the interests of seniors.
Let us not forget the lessons of the past. Governments have repeatedly tried to make cuts and implement policies that would disproportionately harm seniors. Each time, CARP has been at the forefront, defending the rights and financial security of older Canadians.
Now, more than ever, we need to rally together to ensure that our hard-earned benefits are preserved.
