Celebrate World Wetlands Day

Find out how to preserve the planet’s water supply on World Wetlands Day.

On Feb. 2, events around the globe are aimed at making the public more aware of the value and benefit of our wetland areas. The message of this year’s event is “Healthy Wetlands, Healthy People.”

Conservationists have celebrated World Wetlands day since 1997 to mark the signing date of the Convention on Wetlands in Ramsar, Iran in 1971. Since that time, 157 countries have adopted the Ramsar Convention.

According to the website the Convention’s mission “is the conservation and wise use of all wetlands through local, regional and national actions and international cooperation, as a contribution towards achieving sustainable development throughout the world.”

Conservation areas like the Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre in Ontario will be hosting activities, such as hands-on demonstrations and a film screening, to highlight the issues and the Ramsar Convention. Topics to be covered include water availability, wetland food, clean water, water pollution, and floods.
