CARP 25th Anniversary Announcements

This year CARP will celebrate its 25th anniversary. For two and half decades, CARP has brought the issues that affect older Canadians to the forefront of the political debate and to change the way people view aging. Much has changed and we did not do this alone.

To celebrate our past achievements as well as those yet to come we are launching two new initiatives:

Celebrating 25 Canadians who contributed to the quality of life for Canadians as we age

To celebrate 25 years of working to improve the quality of life for Canadians as we age, CARP is asking members to nominate 25 people who have contributed the most to the New Vision of Aging for Canada.

By recognizing and honouring people who make meaningful contributions to improve our quality of life as we age – or who represent the New Vision of Aging for Canada – we hope to foster a feeling of community service and involvement and encourage others to follow suit. We are also interested in what you believe should be the New Vision of Aging.

Whether it’s a retired nurse who organizes meals on wheels, a researcher who has discovered a major health breakthrough or a politician who has advanced the cause of aging in Canada, we need you to nominate people worthy of the honour.

Over the next few months, we’ll be soliciting nominations from CARP members, Zoomer Magazine readers and the general public via CARP.ca and our online newsletters. Nominations will be open until July 31, 2009. CARP’s Advisory Board will view the nominations and then select the Top 25, who will be honoured at our Annual General Meeting in October. Your recommendations should include the name and contact info of the nominee, your name and contact info, as well as a 250-word summary on why you feel your person is deserving of the recognition.

Please send your nominations by e-mail to: [email protected]. Hard copies may be mailed to CARP National Office, 27 Queen St. E., Ste. 702, Toronto, ON M5C 2M6 Attention: 25th Anniversary

The CARP 25th Anniversary Scholarship Fund for Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology

As a special initiative during its 25th Anniversary, CARP is establishing a Scholarship Fund for people interested in pursuing careers in Gerontology and Geriatric medicine and nursing. .

This Scholarship Fund is CARP’s unique response to the shortage of Geriatric doctors and nurses and Gerontologists in Canada.

Ross Mayot, Vice President, Community Development, says “The Scholarship Fund is another example of how CARP is being proactive in addressing the needs of an aging population. It is a tangible way to support the engagement of a new generation of professionals in these fields in response to the changing demographic patterns in our society and will give individuals, organizations and associations an even greater reason join and support CARP’s “March to a Million” members.”

Details of the program will be announced shortly.
