Alberta Finance Minister Iris Evans Statement on Pension Reform

Canada’s public pension programs have earned our country international recognition for their success at supporting retirees while remaining financially sustainable. Nevertheless, with only one in four Canadians being members of a pension plan, government has a role to play to help ensure individuals have opportunities to save for retirement to supplement the public pension programs. As ministers responsible for pensions, our goal is to make it possible for Canadians to maintain their standard of living after working years.

I’m hoping the meeting of ministers responsible for finance and pensions will lead to determining a cost-effective, efficient and effective manner for individuals to supplement their public pensions and have adequate retirement savings. While the Alberta government supports any plan that helps build a stronger retirement income system, we believe a Canada-wide solution is the best solution, and hope that other provinces are in agreement.
