Important Dates on the Hill: Get Ready to Mark your March calendars!

There are a couple of important dates that CARP members should mark in their calendars next month. On March 8th 2011, the Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities (HUMA) will be considering Bill C-481 in clause-by-clause review. Bill C-481, An Act to amend the Canadian Human Rights Act and the Canada Labour Code (mandatory retirement age) proposes to repeal Section 15(1)(c) of the Human Rights Act. “Section 15(1)(c)” allows mandatory retirement for federally regulated industries – the courts have ruled it is in breach of the equality rights protected under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The next date to watch is March 22nd 2011, not only is it World Water Day but it is also the date Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty has chosen to deliver his budget. In the event the Harper government were to fall in a confidence vote in the days following the budget, we could expect a federal election voting day on May 2.
