Dear Ms. Demkey:

Thank you for your letter of November 13, 2013 urging Finance Ministers to act now on a modest enhancement to the Canada Pension Plan.

As you may be aware, I met with my provincial and territorial colleagues on November 1, 2013 to discuss a number of areas of shared interest, including our ongoing efforts to strengthen the retirement income system. At the meeting we agreed to several objectives that would underlie options to enhance the CPP. A report back on the outcomes of the meeting was provided to Premiers.

Following their meeting on November 15, 2013, Premiers directed Finance Ministers to discuss objectives and options for an enhancement of the CPP at the December 2013 meeting of federal-provincial-territorial Finance Ministers.

The Government of Manitoba remains very supportive of a modest, phased-in and fully-funded expansion of the CPP. I will continue to advocate with my colleagues for a meaningful CPP enhancement that meets these objectives.

Thank you once again for your letter.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Howard
