CARP Responds to Ontario Premier’s Ageist Comments

March 19, 2018 – CARP is deeply concerned by the ageist and inflammatory comments expressed by Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne to students at Humber University on Friday March 16:

“If you don’t vote, then somebody who looks like me is going to vote, some senior person, older than me, some white person. You know, the reality is, that, that’s the demographic that’s going to get out and vote and so we need you to be engaged.”

While it is true that 98% of CARP members voted in the last federal election, and also overwhelmingly vote in provincial and municipal elections, CARP strongly encourages qualified voters of all ages to cast their ballots. CARP is also committed to initiatives of inter-generational cooperation.

Premier Wynne’s ageist comments are unfortunate and may serve to drive a wedge between generations.

We invite Ms Wynne to clarify her comments in this regard immediately.
