Halton's heritage

You are invited to join us for our May community meetings to learn about the history and heritage of Halton through the eyes of long time Halton resident John McDonald.  Through extensive research John has become an expert on our local history.  He has written three books and through his entertaining and informative presentation our past will truly come to life.

In addition to conducting walking tours around Halton John has been a regular speaker at churches, schools, service clubs and historical societies over the past 35 years. His first book Halton Sketches  was published in 1976. This was followed by Halton Sketches Revisited first published in 1996 is now into its third printing.

After extensive research in England, Bermuda and Ontario a new book Halton’s Heritage was introduced in 2011. This features the story of William Halton, the man our county and region was named for. This new book, which deals with the origin of place names,  includes both written and pictorial essays for over 70 settlements in Halton.

John is a founding member of the Esquesing Historical Society and has been supportive of the Milton Historical Society and was awarded the Ontario Heritage Community Recognition Program Certificate of Achievement in 2003.

He graduated from Ryerson Polytechnic Institute in 1971 and served as a Member of Council on both Halton Hills and the Region of Halton for a 10 year period commencing in 1978.

On February 9, 2013 John was recognized for his community efforts and historical research when presented with the Queens Diamond Jubilee Medal.

With such an extensive background and his long list of accomplishments we can look forward to an evening with John that will both entertain and inform.

Please plan to join us at either Milton or Burlington.

Our Milton meeting will be held on Wednesday May 14th at the Seniors Activity Centre, 500 Childs Drive, Milton.

Our Burlington meeting will be held on Tuesday May 27th at the Seniors Centre, 2285 New Street, Burlington.

Please be aware that if room capacity limits are reached we may have to restrict entrance in order to comply with building safety code regulations. Typically there is more space available at Milton.

Doors will open at both locations at 6.30pm. The program will begin at 7.00pm and end at about 9.00pm. Coffee and tea will be available.

Both evenings will begin with a short welcoming address from our Chairperson, Tom Carrothers. Tom will also provide a brief update on your CARP Halton Chapter and CARP National activities.

This will be followed by our featured presentation with John McDonald.

As usual we have a number of sponsors for both meetings. We will be very pleased to welcome them and to thank them for their support. They will all have tables where you will be able to chat with their representatives and pick up additional information.

There will be a break at a convenient point in John’s presentation which will allow time to socialize with fellow members and to spend more time visiting our sponsors.
