CARP SUPPORTS BILL TO IMPROVE THE GIS PROGRAM

This week CARP supported MP Carole Freeman’s private member’s bill C-516 which, if passed, would provide for full Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) retroactivity of the amounts that beneficiaries have missed out on due to problems with the way the program is administered; an increase of $110 a month in GIS benefits; an increase in the allowance for the survivor to the same level as GIS benefits; automatic registration for everyone 65 years of age and older who qualifies for benefits; and the payment of benefits to a beneficiary’s spouse for six months after a beneficiary’s death.
