CARP SARNIA-LAMBTON CHAPTER LAUNCH SEPTEMBER 23, 2013

CARP Sarnia-Lambton, Chapter #57 held its very successful inaugural meeting on Monday, September 23, 2013 in the upstairs auditorium of the Royal Canadian Legion in Sarnia. There was an excellent turnout of CARP members and prospective members who enjoyed socializing and listening to the presentations of our two guest speakers. Several CARP memberships and subscriptions to Zoomer magazine were sold, door prizes were awarded, the handout “Ten Good Reasons to Join CARP” was distributed and feedback was sought about future directions for the fifty-seventh CARP chapter.

In her opening remarks, Sheila Newton-Smith, Chairperson of the Steering Committee (or Interim Board) welcomed everyone, introduced the other members of the Steering Committee – Peter and Sheila Fitzsimons and Richard Newton-Smith – and discussed the brand new CARP chapter in Sarnia-Lambton.

Our first guest speaker, Anthony Quinn, CARP Director, Community Development provided a very interesting and comprehensive overview of the role, objectives and accomplishments of CARP in Canada over the past thirty years. Richard Newton-Smith thanked Anthony and provided him with a package of information about Sarnia-Lambton.

Richard also introduced Les McDermott, who had kindly volunteered to present an abbreviated version of one of his one-day workshops entitled “During Retirement and Beyond”. Les, who has two business degrees, an MBA and five professional designations, including that of Registered Retirement Consultant, is well known in Sarnia-Lambton for his more than thirty years of financial planning services, his articles on various personal finance topics, and his live call-in programs. Les provided an extremely informative presentation, which all present enjoyed.

Peter Fitzsimmons expressed appreciation to Les McDermott on behalf of all those present and presented him with a one year on-line subscription to Zoomer magazine.

Sheila Fitzsimons then introduced a feedback form, asking everyone for suggestions for future meeting topics and speakers and for volunteers to assist with our local chapter activities.

Although the date of the next meeting of CARP Sarnia-Lambton was announced as Monday, November 25, 2013, it has been necessary to change this date due to scheduling difficulties at the Legion. As a result the November meeting will take place on Tuesday, November 26, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion (upstairs), 286 Front Street North, Sarnia. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The featured guest speakers, Dr. P. Shetty of Sarnia and Ms. Jeanette Lewis M.S.W. (postworksavvy.com) of Toronto and Grand Bend will discuss “Keeping Healthy and Happy in Retirement”.

CARP members and prospective members are invited to attend this event which promises to be both entertaining and thought-provoking.
