Brockville 1000 Islands CARP Chapter partnered with LEAP (Local Elder Abuse Prevention) Network of Lanark, Leeds and Grenville to provide a free seniors pancake breakfast on June 15 to recognize World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
Many volunteers, Leeds-Grenville MP Gord Brown, MPP Steve Clark and Brockville Mayor David Henderson assisted in serving sausages, omelets, fluffy pancakes, syrup and beverages.
In addition, local musicians Tom Wilson and Murray Golledge provided entertainment, gratefully enjoyed by all.
A table with local agency and organizational brochures were available along with people having purple wash-out tinting applied to hair, which CARP donated $5 per person, to LEAP.
Together with free-will donations, including Bridlewood Manor by Revera matching dollar for dollar, the amount came to $1,006.35, which was also donated to LEAP.
As well, several provided prizes were given throughout the event.
Elder abuse comes in many forms; physical, verbal, psychological, financial, sexual and neglect.

After the breakfast, MPP Clark made an announcement regarding a Trillium grant of $35,000 for CARP Brockville 1000 Islands with regards to enhancing the quality of life for people as they age.
CARP members, also the steering committee for Age Friendly Communities, invites the public to take ownership of this effort towards receiving the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Network of Age Friendly Cities and Committees designation for Brockville.
This process, in its infancy, will address eight major key elements; outdoor spaces and buildings, transportation, housing, social participation, respect and social inclusion, civic participation and employment, communication and information, as well as community and health services.
Going forward will require dedicated individuals willing to sit on sub-committees for the betterment of all mature adults in Brockville.
