We hope everyone has an enjoyable Holiday season and that you will all be ready to join us as our Community Meetings begin again in January. Our meetings will be held as usual in both Milton and Burlington. For this the first meeting of the new year we will have two presentations. These are both topical for this time of year and are not only of vital importance to all drivers but are of particular importance for seniors. We will be pleased to welcome Lisa Thompson from the Road Safety Marketing Office of the Ontario Ministry of Transportation. Lisa will be talking about Safe Winter Driving and the Senior License Renewal Process for drivers 80 and older. She will also include the collision reporting process for those 70 and older.

1. Safe Winter Driving

During this presentation you will learn about:

  • The driving process and the how primary and secondary tasks along with what we call the “human factor” can result in dangerous driving situations
  • How to properly prepare ourselves and our vehicles for winter driving
  • What kind of conditions you can expect on Ontario roads during the winter and how best to manage in those conditions
  • How Ontario manages the snow removal process and when you can expect roads to be cleared
  • All-season tires versus winter or hybrid tires and the benefits of tire maintenance
  • How to find out more about Ontario road conditions before you travel

Following this first topic there will be a break which will allow time to socialize with fellow members and to visit our sponsors.

2. The Senior License Renewal Process for Drivers 80 and Older

During this presentation you will learn about:

  • Trends and statistics for older drivers
  • The testing requirements for those 80 years and older
  • The collision reporting process for those 70 years and older
  • Signs of aging or medications as it relates to driving ability
  • Driving tips and some more recent rules of the road.

We have been lucky with the weather so far this year but typical winter driving conditions can only be just around the corner. There are also very different rules around collision reporting for drivers over 70 that you may not be aware of and of course we all know that we are faced with a driving test if we are 80 or older. We encourage everyone to join us as we are sure these presentations will provide a greater understanding of what we can expect.

Our  Milton meeting will be held on Wednesday January 13th, 2016 at the Seniors Activity Centre, 500 Childs Drive, Milton

Our Burlington meeting will be held on Tuesday January 26th, 2016 at the Seniors Centre, 2285 New Street, Burlington.

Our meetings at both locations will be held in the evening. Doors will open at 6.30pm with the main meeting taking place between 7.00pm and 9.00pm. Coffee and tea will be available.

Please be aware that if room capacity limits are reached we may have to restrict entrance in order to comply with building safety code regulations. Typically there is more space available at Milton.

Both meetings will begin with a short welcoming address from our Chairperson, Tom Carrothers. Tom will also provide a brief update on your CARP Halton Chapter and CARP National activities.

This will be followed by our featured presentation.

As usual we have a number of sponsors for both meetings. We will be very pleased to welcome them and to thank them for their support. They will all have tables where you will be able to chat with their representatives and pick up additional information.
