Tough Questions to Ask Candidates – Election 2021

Ask these questions at all-candidates’ meetings (whether live or virtual). Ask them when they coming knocking at your door. Send them an email. Demand clear, straight answers – dates, measurable outcomes, dollars to be allocated. Don’t let them wriggle off the hook.

1. WHAT WILL YOUR PARTY DO TO IMPROVE AND EXPAND HOME CARE?

Home care, community care, and respite care must be the foundations of our long-term care strategy going forward. We’ll never be able to meet the demand through institutional care alone. What will your party do? Will you commit to income tax rebates for family caregivers?

2. WHAT WILL YOUR PARTY DO TO IMPROVE LONG-TERM INSTITUTIONAL CARE?

COVID-19 brutally exposed the outrageous deficiencies of our long-term care system. Yes, it’s a provincial responsibility – but the feds can play a big role in creating national performance standards and making sure the provinces follow them. What will your party do about this?

3. WHAT WILL YOUR PARTY DO TO IMPROVE THE PERFORMANCE OF OUR HEALTH CARE SYSTEM OVERALL?

Compared to all other countries in the OECD with public health care systems, Canada sits near the top in spending…and near the bottom in outcomes. From intolerable wait times to unequal access to the best treatments and medicines, our system fails to deliver. What will your party do about this? How will you fix healthcare NOW?

4. WHAT WILL YOUR PARTY DO TO IMPROVE FINANCIAL SECURITY FOR SENIORS?

How about increasing the OAS by at least 10%, and CPP survivor benefits by at least 25%, for people over 65? What about better protection for pensions? What about stronger investor protection? What will your party do in this area?
