Your Voice: Keeping Healthy

In a recent survey we asked what you do to stay healthy.

Over 2,800 of you provided responses. These responses are so inspiring that we wanted to share just a sampling of them with you. Here’s what is clear to us:

  • CARP members care about staying healthy.
  • CARP members understand health as physical, mental, social and spiritual.
  • Respondents find ways to promote their health and quality of life in ways appropriate to their own situation. For some, this may be walking their dog, for others it could be leading a fitness class. There is no one right way to find wellness.

Q: What do you do to stay healthy and what do you use your good health for?

I try to have a variety of foods to eat; I don’t get out often enough to go for walks, but I try. For mental health, I love to read mystery books by well-known authors of the genre. I also enjoy getting together with friends for coffee and conversation.

Regular exercise with a trained professional experienced in senior health. Travel is one thing we enjoy when healthy.

I’m a fitness instructor, lift fairly heavy weights 2-3 times a week, walk almost everywhere – church, groceries, to workouts, to ballroom dance class (I teach), to dances; or I cycle – deliver menus, get groceries, visit friends. I have a vibrant social life and volunteer in many places – sing in the choir, sit on the board, have many Zoom meetings – book club, climate change meetings

Follow healthcare recommendations and do as much as possible whenever possible.

Get vaccines as required, covid, flu, shingles and pneumonia.

Exercise, eat extremely well, take appropriate supplements, drink a lot of water, take care of my mental health. I enjoy exercising, walking, playing mahjongg, entertaining, visiting friends and family, going to a wide variety of theatrical and dance performances and art exhibits, going to Israeli dancing classes and travelling.

moderate physical activity, maintain contact with friends & family, keep up to date on news/current events, read, pursue a variety of creative activities i.e. sewing, watercolour painting…

Get my vaccines, connect with medical professionals when needed, eat as well as possible, socialize with my people (friends, family, colleagues), rest. I enjoy life when I am in my best health.
