British Columbia Expands Access to Over-the-Counter Hearing Aids

June 2026

Adults aged 18 and older in British Columbia with mild to moderate hearing loss can now purchase Health Canada-approved over-the-counter hearing aids without a prescription through retail stores and online sellers.

B.C. is the first province or territory in Canada to expand access in this way.

CARP welcomes this important step toward making hearing support more affordable and accessible, particularly for older adults living on fixed incomes or without extended health benefits. Earlier access to hearing support can help people remain independent, socially connected and engaged in their communities. This announcement provides British Columbians with greater choice while helping reduce the financial and accessibility barriers that too often prevent people from addressing hearing loss.

CARP encourages other provinces and territories to follow B.C.’s lead and expand access to safe, affordable over-the-counter hearing aids across Canada.

Over-the-counter hearing aids are not a replacement for professional hearing care. Adults with hearing concerns are encouraged to consult an audiologist, especially if they experience sudden hearing loss, persistent ear pain, ringing in one ear or rapidly worsening symptoms.
